Vintage notes
2024 vintage was the hottest, driest and earliest harvest on record. Rainfall turned off like a tap at the end of September 2023, with nominally no rain until the season broke in May 2024. Unseasonable warmth all through the growing season combined with heatwaves in January meant harvest started early and was over extremely quickly. But with sunshine comes flavour and 2024 does not disappoint in fruit weight and con centration. No rain and plenty of sun means wines hit their optimal ripeness (albeit earli er than expected!) and created wines with great depth of flavour and extract. The ample marri blossom and dry conditions meant both bird and disease pressure was low, the main thing keeping us awake at night was the water stress on our dry grown vines. Both whites and reds show opulence and power that so far show great promise for the future.

Lovely lifted perfume, sweet citrus blossom, a whiff of honey, a nudge of gooseberry. Palate is bright and firmly intense with a little tannin bitterness on the front-palate that lingers on. It's a fruit-driven style, strongly varietal sauvignon blanc ruling the roost. Clean, dry and appetising finish. (Sauvignon blanc, semillon and chenin blanc).

As with all Cullens, we see the use of biodynamics in action, although we are told this is the ‘fun and joyful’ side. Who knew biodynamics had a fun and joyful style? This wine is part of quite an extensive array of Sauvignon Blanc Semillon blends offered by Cullens, this one with a dribble of Chenin Blanc and friends – 53% Sauvignon Blanc, 28% Semillon, 14% Chenin, 4% Chardonnay and 1% Verdelho. It hails from a trio of their vineyards. A pale lemon hue, this has quite an intense nose with herbals to the fore, along with florals, soursop, citrus and touches of lemon curd. Pleasingly powerful aromas. This is balanced and seamless, with the palate beautifully constructed, and a lingering, clean finish. This will excite even more in a year or two and then drink well for the following four years. These Savvy Sem wines from Cullens are anything but your simple, slurpable Savvys blends, and all the better for that.

The back label says this is sauvignon blanc and semillon with a splash of chenin blanc. The result? A delicious drink. Floral and spicy, tangy and juicy, it’s a combo that’s come together so well – nothing dominates. There’s texture, a tug of phenolics adding to the palate weight and lively acidity to close. Nice one.
